Could you or someone you know be a trustee?
The first thing we need to do is form a new charitable organisation for Cow Hill Hall, with a board of trustees. The organisation must be community owned and led to be eligible for the funding to acquire the Heathercroft site, and build the hall.
-
You can! Providing you live in the catchment area of Lundavra Primary School.
The role is voluntary and can be an excellent way to gain professional or personal development experience, or to give something back to your community now and for future generations.
Anyone can be a trustee as long as they are not an undischarged bankrupt, don’t have an unspent conviction for dishonesty or an offence under the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005, and aren’t disqualified from being a company director. In addition, people who have committed a serious offence against children are not eligible.
-
The board of trustees will collectively lead, control and supervise Cow Hill Hall’s development and activities. The board is the part of the organisation with formal power and responsibility. These responsibilities will be set out in a governing document and backed up by law.
Trustees must act in the best interests of the organisation and its beneficiaries. If things do go wrong, it’s the trustees who will be called to account. However, there is no financial liability being a trustee.

Setting and maintaining the vision, mission and values of the organisation.
Developing the direction, strategy and planning.
Ensuring the organisation has the structure and resources for its work.
Establishing policies and procedures to govern organisational activity, including guidance for the board, volunteers and staff.
Establishing systems for reporting and monitoring.
Managing risk and ensuring compliance and accountability with the governing document, any external regulators and the law.
Making certain that the financial affairs of the organisation are conducted properly and are accurately reported.
